Much has been written on methods of study and how to teach students to learn. The Study Techniques Assessment Report (STAR), developed by Cassel's founder, Dr Brian Costello, has been especially designed to help not only students and their teachers, but counsellors and parents as well.

STAR is a self administering software program that takes about 10 minutes to complete. It gives an individualised five page printed report following the completion of the program.

STAR is the world's first computerised study techniques assessment and reporting software and has four fast and friendly applications.

The first is a self-administered program for the student, which assesses existing study techniques. The test takes about ten minutes to complete and uses a Socratic technique (questions and answers/heuristic teaching method) with 25 true/false or multiple choice items.

These have special bearing on diagnosing problems commonly encountered in revision and home assignments. Logical sets of questions reveal a picture of what students individually employ in their study habits.

These questions form the basis for the next two steps, a diagnostic assessment to reveal and improve study methods and an individual student narrative report that offers assessment with individualised recommendations.

For counsellors and teachers, STAR maintains a positive counsellor/teacher/student relationship. It is the PROGRAM that reports where improvements should be made. STAR is designed to reveal weakness in study habits and then prescribe practical ways to remedy problems immediately.
